When U.S. airspace was suddenly closed on September 11, 2001, 38 international airplanes were diverted to Gander, nearly doubling the town’s population overnight. The stranded passengers—referred to as “come from aways”—arrived from all over the world, frightened, confused, and cut off from news about loved ones. The residents of Gander quickly mobilized to help. Led by figures like Mayor Claude Elliott and local volunteers, the townspeople opened their homes, schools, and community centers, providing food, clothing, and comfort to nearly 7,000 unexpected guests. Despite cultural differences, language barriers, and the uncertainty of the unfolding tragedy, bonds begin to form between the locals and the travelers.
