Assistant Stage Manager’s Duties: Pre-Production to Post-Show

Pre-Production Duties

• Meet with Stage Manager to review show structure, rehearsal needs, and expectations

• Learn script, cue structure, and backstage flow

• Assist in preparing rehearsal materials (sign-in sheets, props lists, run sheets)

• Help set up rehearsal spaces and backstage areas

Examples & Best Practices:

• Read the script thoroughly and mark cues early

• Ask questions up front to clarify responsibilities

• Stay organized—ASM often becomes the SM’s right hand

Rehearsal Period

1. Support Rehearsals

• Track blocking, entrances, exits, and prop usage

• Take notes as assigned by SM

• Help manage rehearsal flow and actor questions

• Assist with calling actors and maintaining rehearsal discipline

Examples & Best Practices:

• Keep a clean, legible prompt copy or tracking notes

• Communicate clearly and calmly with cast

• Anticipate needs before being asked

Technical & Dress Rehearsals

2. Backstage & Tech Support

• Help coordinate backstage traffic and quick changes

• Assist with cue tracking during tech

• Relay information between SM, crew, and performers

• Help ensure safety backstage

• Wear dark, quiet clothing during runs

• Use glow tape and clear labeling for backstage areas

• Stay focused—tech week is high-pressure

3. Run the Show Backstage

• Assist with preset checks

• Call actors to places and entrances

• Help manage props, scene shifts, or backstage crew

• Troubleshoot small issues before escalating to SM

• Maintain a calm, professional presence

• Follow SM direction exactly

• Keep the show moving smoothly and safely

Post-Production

4. Strike & Wrap-Up

• Assist with strike and cleanup

• Help restore backstage and storage areas

• Participate in debrief with SM if requested

• Label and store items neatly

• Thank cast and crew—ASM is a relationship-driven role

• Make notes for improvements on future shows
